The Simplest Health Hack You're Not Using (But Should Be)

An interview with breathing coach and owner of Slo Breathworks, Sarah Hutcherson, who reminds us that breath is a free resource available to us at all times. Using the breath is a gateway to regulate our nervous system and feel better immediately.

Boost Your Health Within Minutes

As we take a pause amidst the holiday bustle, let’s stop and remember that health is incredibly multi-dimensional.There is not one avenue to better health, but many. In fact, layering of various habits in each dimension/node of health is the best way to create lasting whole-body health.

Stress/Relaxation Node

One of the major modifiable nodes of health (meaning you have the power to change) is Stress Management/Relaxation. We can modify our stress and relaxation responses on the daily, to promote health. The stress of the holiday season is omnipresent, and yet there are free tools available to us quite literally every second of every day.

In fact, this one tool is something that you can’t live without. The breath.

The irony is that the breath is the easiest, most accessible ticket to better health and happiness, and yet, the most overlooked. While you can argue that we are all breathing every day, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this, I’d push back and ask, are you aware of your breath? Do you use your breath as a tool to build awareness to feel the way you want to feel? If not, welcome to the club! We can all use a little refresher, and this month we’re serving up just that.

December Challenge: Breathe Deeply

I’ve been challenging everyone since the start of this month to take just 5 deep breaths when sitting down to eat each meal, every day, for the month of December. We’re calling it “Breathe Deeply December” and if you do nothing else to improve your health this month, let the breath be your gateway into mindful eating, and honoring the enjoyment of meal times. A small, but mighty step in your journey toward health.

Having done this breathing practice for just 5 breaths before each meal so far, some small shifts that I’ve noticed:

  • Slowing down before eating has allowed me to remember to chew each bite more, which aids in digestion of nutrients.
  • Paying more attention to savoring each different flavor on my taste buds, increasing enjoyment of the meal in front of me.
  • I’ve been able to notice sensations of fullness sooner when eating slower, leading to less likelihood to over eat.
  • Increased gratitude for the food in front of me, the blessings of my life, and gratitude for being present in the moment.

I’m challenging YOU to join me in taking 5 deep breaths and ground yourself in the moment before taking your first bite of each meal for the rest of the month. Be ready to feel some really neat, unexpected shifts that will ensue.
